Bach / Seiler / Bachcollektiv

Description:

This album is composed of works by Bach and his associates from the Keten period by the Bach Collective, an ancient instrument ensemble founded in Keten, a place associated with Bach. The violin soloists are Midori Seiler, who is also the artistic director of the Bach Collective, and Mayumi Hirasaki, who is active in Germany. Although Bach's time at the Keten Court was short, lasting only about six years, the existence of an excellent orchestra, the Collegium Musicum, and the many opportunities for performance led to a great deal of creative activity and the production of a great many masterpieces. This album attempts to get a closer look at Keten's court music by including works by Joseph Spies, Georg Linike, and Augustin Reinhard Stricker, all of whom had close ties to Keten at the time. There is a reason why an outstanding court orchestra was created in Keten. BackgroundFriedrich Wilhelm I [1688-1740], who ascended to the Prussian throne in 1713, embarked on a sudden reform in the name of rebuilding the nation's finances, which had been shaken by the profligate spending habits of his father, King Frederick I [1657-1713], and boldly cut the cultural budget. As part of this reform, the court orchestra was immediately disbanded (although Friedrich Wilhelm I was enthusiastic about military affairs and spent a great deal of money on them). The Court Orchestra in KöthenThe court in Köthen originally had no orchestra. Therefore, the young Marquis Leopold [1694-1728], an ardent music lover who traveled to Italy for long periods of time to see operas and concerts, reacted immediately to the dissolution of the Prussian court orchestra, which led to the creation of a court orchestra in Ketten in 1713. Augustin Reinhard Stricker [1680-1718?]Stricker was a former Prussian court musician who composed, conducted, and performed. At the court of Köthen he became music director in 1714 and resigned in 1717 to move to the court of Saxe-Coburg. Bach's predecessor. Chief court musician at the court of Joseph Speece Keten. In other words, he was the concertmaster of the court orchestra, and some believe that Bach's collection of unaccompanied violin partitas and sonatas may have been written for Speece. His association with Bach continued after Bach left Köthen, and in 1728 he became godfather to Spies' son. (1/3)
