Revisiting the greatness of the piece. Gerd Schaller and the Philharmonic Festiva, who are making a comprehensive recording of all Bruckner symphonies for the Bruckner Year 2024, have taken on the challenge of performing the 1877 second edition of Bruckner's Symphony No. 2. They previously recorded the original 1872 (Callaghan edition) version live in July 2011, and now they have taken a step back to perform the second version. After the premiere of the 1872 version of Bruckner's Symphony No. 2, minor revisions were made as usual, but in 1876, a major revision was made to achieve the final ideal form. This time it was performed and recorded, and in many ways it has changed significantly from the previous work. The overall length is not much different, but the second and third movements are reversed, and the 1877 version is very compact and well-balanced. Schaller concludes by saying that it is a mystery why this piece is not performed more often, and that it is "a masterpiece! he concludes.
