This album contains spirituals from the American Civil War era and before. Spirituals were often "code songs" with double meanings used in the "Underground Railroad" movement to smuggle black slaves to the northern states and Canada, containing maps and secret messages about how and when to escape. Michelle not only sings spirituals, but also leads veterans' singing groups and supports the homeless, and her deeply emotional voice on the album's opening track not only honors Harriet Tubman, a black emancipation woman leader, but also expresses her own generous and compassionate spirit. It is also a good representation of Michelle's own generous and compassionate spirit. Wade In The Water" tells where to walk on the river to prevent dogs from sniffing out the scent of slaves fleeing in the night, and "Canaan's Land" is about the route to Canada. The powerful music of hope by people who lived through incredible oppression and suffering must have new power in this day and age.But now it's already here, with the recent Japanese indie music compilation Minna Miteru, and while there have been a lot of great recent reissues of Japanese music from the 70s and 80s, most of today's independent Japanese bands and artists are largely unknown outside of Japan, so their music is hard to find. And we couldn't think of anyone better to create a good guide to this special scene than Saya. Her love, dedication, and personal selections have created such a unique and beautiful compilation. Not only close friends and collaborators of the Tenniscoats (Edymaakon, yumbo, Yufuko Ikema), but also the legendary Jun Kohase (aka Grim), one-man orchestra Ichi, organ+trumpet+trumpet trio popo, mysterious psychedelic songwriter Zai Chichi, pianist and electronic musician Ytamo, and many other fellow bands that make up the undisputed outsider scene in the pop world can also be heard here.Melodica, electronics, folk songs, brass band, experimental music, melodies, melodies... Every song explodes with ideas, and I myself will forever be listening to the Tenniscoats/yumbo collaboration and Zayaendo's "Chickadee." (2/2)
