The music of Nagano, the musical director of the Bavarian State Opera, and the direction by the genius Cherniakov have made this excellent production of "Hovenschitina", which has been acclaimed as the best of its kind, available in vivid sound and picture. The cast is led by veteran singer Hovánský in Bulturász, with Folkert's Andrei, who is one of the best Helden tenors of his generation, Nielund's Emma, who is very active as a dramatic soprano, and Zoffel's Marfa, a famous German mezzo who has an outstanding presence. The cast is also very well rounded, which is a major attraction.Since "Khovanshchina" was never completed, the part of the play that Mussorgsky did not compose, the closing section, with an ending by Stravinsky, ends quietly and with deep reverberations.
