1985 Release: The Highwaymen's debut album, Highwaymen The Highwaymen were a country supergroup formed by four legendary artists representing outlaw country: Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. The group was active from 1985 to 1995. In 1984, Glen Campbell first played "Highwayman" to Johnny Cash, and the four artists hit it off while recording a TV program in Switzerland, agreeing to work on a project together. Later, while working on their debut album, Marty Stuart played the song for Cash again and said, "Four verses, four souls, and four of them. It's perfect for them." That's how the group name, debut album title, and debut single all became "Highwayman."The name was perfectly suited to them, as they were road musicians constantly on the move and artists with an "outlaw" image. Both the album Highwayman and the single of the same name reached number one on the country charts. Furthermore, their cover of Guy Clark's "Desperados Waiting for a Train" also made it into the Top 20. (From manufacturer information)
