A new Christmas album by the master of Belgian ancient music, Erik van Nervel, and the Clende, an ancient music ensemble led by Nervel that focuses on vocal music. Timeless Christmas classics such as "Nu zijt wellekome" and "Hoe leit dit kindeken" (How this infant lies) are firmly rooted in our collective memory and live on today. These carols are not liturgical church music in the strict sense of the word, but rather originated in the context of private devotions in homes and monasteries rather than within the church. Manuscripts and printed collections of many medieval and early modern songs circulated among the urban and civic classes, and these carols are simple and familiar, much like folk songs composed for communal singing. However, these popular Flemish carols were rarely incorporated into the art music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, in contrast to the French and German examples. There was a wide gap between this popular simplicity and the sophisticated art music of the time. In this recording, traditional Flemish carols are boldly rearranged in the baroque style in which they would have historically occurred. In several cases, it is more appropriate to call them reworkings than arrangements, with "In 't stalleken van Bethlehem" and "Een seraphinsche tonghe" being composed of 60% and 70% new material, respectively, by Erik van Nervel and others.
