Description:
Daniel Behle / Brahms: The Beautiful Magelone, and Others (2 CDs) Ludwig Tieck’s *The Beautiful Magelone* is a full-length novel that depicts the story of Count Peter and the beautiful Neapolitan princess Magelone, from their first meeting through the hardships they overcome until they are united. Inspired by this work, Brahms set the poems inserted at the end of each chapter of the novel to music, creating the song cycle *The Story of the Beautiful Magelone*. While listening to just the poetry-set songs does not reveal the entire story, Brahms so carefully paints the background through his music that it is possible to experience a unique world even without the text. This two-CD set is designed so that you can first enjoy the songs without the text, and then listen to the songs while hearing the text read aloud on the second CD. Although Brahms never wrote an opera, this understated and romantic work can truly be called a masterpiece worthy of being called his “opera.” Daniel Behle’s sensitive singing accurately brings this delicate story to life, and the narration by Jürgen Schatz—a popular German actor—allows listeners to visualize the couple’s world of love, even if they do not understand German.
