This album focuses on the Detroit group, and the youthful, fresh playing of Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Burrell, and Pepper Adams, who had just entered the New York scene, is a major attraction. While the Chicago and Philadelphia groups are sometimes described as earthy and soulful, the Detroiters' playing is more elegant and sophisticated.
