Campra was responsible for the establishment and development of a new style of stage music in the French Baroque, the "opera-barre". Although he was not allowed to be both a clergyman and a composer of stage music, and was dismissed from his position as the music director of a cathedral, "The Carnival of Venice" was completed in Paris in 1699, just before the arrival of the 18th century, and is regarded as one of Campra's representative works of stage music, along with his highly successful "Elegant Europe".
