Handel's young talent explodes with music that sharply expresses the emotions of the characters! Il Pomo d'Oro, led by Corti, the third release on the PENTATONE label is "Apollo and Daphne" and "Armida Abandoned"! The third release on the PENTATONE label by Francesco Corti and Il Pomo d'Oro, whose two CDs of Bach's harpsichord concertos were "specially selected" by Record Geijutsu magazine and made a big splash in Japan, is two masterpiece cantatas from Handel's youth. In his early twenties, Handel left his native Germany for the home of music, Italy, mainly in Rome, where he quickly absorbed the styles of his predecessors such as Stradella and A. Scarlatti, and composed numerous cantatas in Italian. Two of these masterpieces are "Apollo and Daphne" and "Armida Abandoned". These two works, in which Handel's youthful talent for expressing the emotions of his characters through music exploded, are vividly brought back to life in this performance by Il Pomo d'Oro led by Corti and two talented singers. Katherine LeWeke, a world-renowned coloratura soprano, and John Chest, a baritone who has garnered attention in opera and lieder, sing Handel's brilliant music with a wide range of expression, skillfully changing their voices for each scene. Hats off to him for his artistic and vocal prowess. Corti and Il Pomo d'Oro add a great deal to the characters' emotions and scenes with their improvisational embellishments.Corti's harpsichord, which is so intense that it gouges out the characters' emotions, is particularly impressive. Also noteworthy is the program that combines two works without overtures with overtures and opera suites written in the same period.
