With the excitement from their March 2015 tour of Japan still fresh in our minds, a new album by Marek Janowski and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra is being released. It features Richard Strauss’s “Domestic Symphony,” Op. 53, and “Four Times of the Day,” Op. 76—works by a composer who celebrated the 150th anniversary of his birth in 2014. Janowski, who has served as Artistic Director of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2002, presented 10 major Wagner operas and music dramas—originally staged at Bayreuth—in concert format at the Berlin Philharmonie between 2010 and 2013, and the live recordings from those performances have all received high acclaim. He is also highly skilled in performing the works of R. Strauss, having previously recorded a collection of songs with orchestral accompaniment featuring Soile Isokoski as soloist, as well as the “Alpine Symphony” with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PTC5186339). This recording, too, is a performance that lifts the listener’s spirits with the three-dimensional, pulsating music that is one of Janowski’s hallmarks. The “Family Symphony,” which depicts R. Strauss’s own family, was composed between 1902 and 1903. Premiered in New York in 1904, it is one of his representative works, dedicated to his wife and children. The album cover features a family photograph of R. Strauss. On the other hand, *Four Times of the Day*, composed in 1927 and premiered the following year in 1928, was dedicated to the Schubert Society of Vienna and its conductor, Kerdorf; it is performed by a four-part male chorus (with lyrics by Eichendorff) and orchestra. Composed of four songs—“Morning,” “Noon,” “Evening,” and “Night”—from Eichendorff’s poetry collection *Songs of a Wanderer*, this work features R. Strauss’s characteristic lavish orchestration, which is particularly captivating, even though recordings of it are scarce. King International
