Description:

Johan Joachim Agress Johan Joachim Agress was born in 1701 in Ostergötland, Sweden, the son of a pastor in the parish of Roth. After completing his higher education, he entered Uppsala University in 1721. Although nothing is known about the musical education he received, it is assumed that he was a student of Johan Helmik Ruhmann. He emerged as a violin and harpsichord player and was invited to the court of Kassel after being recognized by Duke Maximilian of Hesse, who was present at a concert at Uppsala Castle. He married the singer Margaretha Fertu in 1749, and remained in Nuremberg three years after her death, unable to return to his "beloved homeland, Sweden," where he died in 1765. While working as a player and chief musician, Agrell composed a great deal of music, drawing inspiration from Rouman and Baroque styles, as well as from the latest music from Germany, France, Italy, and England. He wrote at least 75 cantatas and religious works, most of which have been lost.Currently, Agrelle studies are being conducted through 25 concertos for instruments such as violin and oboe, "Six Sonatas for Harpsichord Solo" (Prophone PCD 004), and chamber music pieces such as "Two Sonatas for Two Flutes and Violin". The new album by the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble features six of Agrel's "Sinfonias". The six-movement "Sinfonia in D major," which includes "Allegro," "Andante," "Meluette and Trio," "Allegro," "Largo," and "Scherzo," is in three or four movements, while the other five "Sinfonias" are in three or four movements. This is the first valuable recording since the album by the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra and Aapo Hakkinen (Aeolus AE 10047), which includes the three "Sinfonias" and the "Concerto for Harpsichord and Flute in B minor". Drottningholms Barockensemle was founded in 1971 to perform music of the 17th and 18th centuries on period instruments. The current membership is 33. Nils-Erik Sparf is the leader of the group. She has released over 60 albums, including Mozart's Complete Violin Concertos (Nos. 1-5) (Swedish Society Discofil SCD 1158). Note; "SheA" is the Agrel work arrangement number by Jeanette Morgenroth Sheerin (1952-2020) of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, a pioneer in Agrel studies.
