Description:
This is great. The images and Japanese subtitles allow for true understanding! Prokofiev's "The Gambler". A psychological portrayal like watching a Russian play, and a flood of super-radical music. Gergiev's leadership shines through. Japanese subtitles are included. Gergiev's re-recording of Prokofiev's early problematic work "The Gambler" is now available on Blu-ray and DVD, with Japanese subtitles, 14 years after the 1996 Philips CD release. Gergiev has shown a passion for recording Prokofiev's works, and his symphonies, concertos, and operas all shine brilliantly as definitive recordings of the same music. Prokofiev's music is innovative and full of sarcasm, but also familiar and strangely cheerful, and it is exactly Gergiev's style. The main cast, including Alexei (Vladimir Galuzin), the General (Sergei Alexershkin), and the Marquis (Nikolai Gassiev), are all played by the same singers, but they are all more accomplished and convincing than ever. The Gambler" was written between 1915 and 1917, when Prokofiev was in his mid-24s. It was to be premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre, but was cancelled due to the Russian Revolution, and in 1927 it was extensively revised and premiered in Brussels in 1929. It was composed at the same time as the "Scythian Suite," Violin Concerto No. 1, and "A Brief Vision," and shows a radical style. This is a typical Russian avant-garde work, without the beautiful arias and heavy choruses that are typical of opera, but with strange melodies and radical sounds. The original is a middle novel by Dostoevsky. Prokofiev himself wrote the libretto, and it is characterized by a very large number of lines.Set in a fictional German city, the game depicts people whose lives are ruined by roulette gambling. The evil and immoral nature of the characters is reminiscent of the corrupt society of late Imperial Russia. The roulette game played on a stage that replicates a casino is a spectacle to behold. Director Jantoo's cinematography is also very skillful, giving the viewer a realistic feeling of actually taking part in the betting. The advantages of the images and Japanese subtitles were so great that it was possible to understand the film better than in the days of CDs. Gergiev's interpretation was also far superior to the previous performance. It is full of the fullness of watching a Russian play, exposing the wickedness and weakness of the characters. The radicalness of Prokofiev's music is overwhelming and overturns the concept of opera. King International
