SACD Hybrid Disc. Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra presented a comprehensive program of Berlioz's orchestral works from October 31 to November 17, 2013. The first release, "Symphonie fantastique" (LSO 0757), and the second, "Harold in Italia" (LSO 0760), have already made a splash. The long-awaited third release is the dramatic symphony "Romeo and Juliet. The symphony's expanded scale and the 90-minute duration, which even includes vocal music, are reminiscent of Mahler's anticipation of the symphony. The orchestration is also very elaborate, and it is rare to find a work more suited to Gergiev. The dramatic symphony "Romeo and Juliet" is said to be the result of Paganini's encouragement to the discouraged Berlize in 1838. Some consider it Berlioz's masterpiece, with many impressive melodies. Gergiev has made excellent recordings of Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev's musicalizations of the same subject matter, and Berlioz is of great interest to me because he is one of my favorite composers and I hold him in high esteem.The work is not descriptive music, but rather only Berlioz's imaginary "Romeo and Juliet," which gradually leads the listener into a funny world.
