Description:
Handel's great oratorio "Saul," a performance of Handel's dramatic oratorio "Saul" at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna in April 2021. The film will be released. The work was composed in the summer of 1738 and premiered in January 1739. It has been performed regularly since then, even during Handel's lifetime, and has been a popular work since that time. It is written with a large chorus and a very rich orchestral part, including the "Symphony" as an overture, and even though it is an oratorio, it also contains very detailed instructions for staging it on stage. The production was directed by Klaus Guth, a highly sought-after director in various theaters around the world. The title role is played by Florian Bösch, an acclaimed lieder singer. David is played by British countertenor Jake Arditti, whose father is Irving Arditti (Arditti String Quartet). The cast of note includes Anna Prohaska, a soprano with a wide repertoire, as Saul's daughter Merab. The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world of European classical music, performed the piece. The subject is Saul, a leader who appears in the book of Samuel in the Old Testament. When the hero David returns after defeating the monster Goliath, the people praise him more than Saul. Saul is jealous of David, tries to kill him, and even tries to borrow the help of a witch, but a ghost appears and predicts the death of Saul and his son Jonathan. In the end, David stands at the head of the people and the curtain comes down. Klaus Guth's direction highlights human jealousy and desire. The scene in which David, the last king to take the throne, rewrites the name DAVID is an ugly but brilliant presentation of the lust of those in power that is still relevant in the modern age.
