Thielemann & SKD reprise Karajan's production of "Die Walküre" with splendid singers to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Salzburg Easter Music Festival!Live footage from the Salzburg Easter Music Festival in April 2017. The Salzburg Easter Festival was founded by Karajan in 1967 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017. This performance of "Die Walküre" is a repeat of the 1967 performance, which Karajan himself directed 50 years ago. Christian Thielemann, assistant to Karajan and music director of the Salzburg Easter Festival as of 2017, will conduct. Although Thielemann is now the leader of the Bayreuth Festival, the Salzburg Easter Festival was originally founded by Karajan as a counterweight to Bayreuth, a sign of the changing times. The first performance of this memorable festival was "Die Walküre," conducted and directed by Karajan, with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra as the orchestra and Günter Schneider-Siemsen as the stage; for the 2017 production, the stage set by Siemsen, reconstructed by Jens Kylian, was recreated, and the female director, a Bulgarian-born director, The production was staged to reflect the new perspective of Vera Nemirova, a female director from Bulgaria.The singers are also splendid for the 50th anniversary. Siegmund was sung by Peter Seifert, one of the leading Helden tenors of his generation. He charmed the audience with his dignified singing and acting. Georg Zeppenfeldt, who is also active at Bayreuth, sang the role of Hunding. Vitaly Kovalyov as Wotan was also a great fit with his taut voice. The women sang brilliantly, as did Anja Halteros as Sieglinde and Anja Kampe as Brünnhilde. Thielemann's conducting, too, rendered Wagner's unique acoustics of deep shadows and details, and dramatically developed the eloquent Wagner music. It was a passionate performance worthy of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Salzburg Easter Festival, to which Karajan devoted his extreme passion. King International
