Puccini’s (1858–1924) *Madama Butterfly* is a work every Japanese person should hear at least once. While it’s a work that invites criticism—whether for being “anachronistic” or “failing to reflect the true nature of Japan”—no matter the production, the story it portrays is universal. As a tragic love story that accurately captures the psyche of a woman waiting devotedly for her beloved, it will surely be passed down through the ages. This video is a recording of a 2012 production staged in Hamburg. The lead role of Cio-Cio-San is played by the young soprano Alexia Voulgaridou, who brings a stylish and contemporary interpretation to the character. With the Romanian tenor Ilincai in the role of Pinkerton, a deep shadow of anguish came to dwell within the character—a man who is, by nature, supposed to be cold-hearted. This production, which garnered attention for the world created by acclaimed director Bussard and the costumes by renowned designer Christian Lacroix, unfolds as a beautifully crafted world, further enhanced by the music woven by conductor Alexander Joel.
