Violetta, the star of the nightlife scene, had never had the chance to experience “true love”—perhaps because she had been involved with so many men. However, the moment she noticed the innocence in Alfredo, whom she was introduced to at a party one night, she fell in love. The two leave the city to build a love nest together, but then Alfredo’s father, Germont, appears. Citing the fact that Alfredo’s sister is about to be married, he pressures Violetta to part ways with Alfredo. With a heavy heart, Violetta agrees to his demand. She vanishes from Alfredo’s life, and when they meet again, she belongs to another man. Alfredo flies into a rage, while Violetta collapses in despair… and the story progresses to the heartbreaking third act. Verdi’s (1813–1901) masterpiece *La Traviata* enjoys exceptional popularity among operas from all eras and regions. It is no exaggeration to say that not only numerous performers but also countless directors have devoted their energies to creating innovative productions. Here, the visionary director Konvichny presents a fresh interpretation. By using modern, minimalist sets and costumes and having the singers move effectively between the audience and the stage, he makes it abundantly clear that this story is set in the present day, not in early 18th-century Paris. At the story’s conclusion, Violetta does not die but rather fades into the darkness—a moment that fully engages the audience’s imagination.
