Released in 1957 on legendary producer Joe Davis' BEACON label, it was one of the first albums to capture the audience's attention through the double entendre in its songs. It was unusual at the time for a woman to sing such explicit songs, and thus may have been the catalyst that brought the album into the limelight and made it more appealing to a wider audience. Although the provocative title and the recognizable, racy cover caused a lot of controversy, the album won fans and became one of the label's best-selling albums of all time.
