Description:

Rossini's controversial "A Terrible Misunderstanding" banned from the Rossini Opera Festival! Rossini's controversial work "A Terrible Misunderstanding" was banned! A Terrible Misunderstanding" is an opera premiered in Bologna in 1811. Rossini was only 19 years old at the time, and this was his second opera. The story is about Gamberotto, a wealthy landowner, and his daughter Ernestina. Gamberotto has arranged for his daughter to marry a wealthy man named Braricchino, but Ernestina loves him so much that she falls in love with Ermanno, a poor young man who enters the house to act as her governess. The servants join in and try to convince Braricchino that Ernestina is actually a castrated man, and now Ernestina is arrested. Ermanno rescues her and they manage to tie the knot.It was banned from the stage when it first premiered due to its outrageous content, and although it has been out of production for a long time, it has become a popular work that has been performed frequently for the past ten years or so. This DVD includes the performance at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro in 2008. Ernestina is played by Prudenskaya, who sang the role in Berlin to great acclaim. Ermanno is a Russian duo with Kolchak, a Rossini tenor of the new generation. As the stubborn father, Gamberotto, we have the veteran singers Buffo and De Simone, and as the stylish Braricchino, the mid-career Rossini basso Vinco. Sahi's (Sarge) production is a shiny, modern stage production with Gamberotto as the president of a modern vegetable importer. With a surprise twist at the end of the act, it is sure to be enjoyable.
