ONDINE label presents the debut of a new star of viola, David Aaron Carpenter. Born in 1986 in New York, he is a 23-year-old viola player who has won the Naumburg Viola Competition in 2006 and has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the U.S. He is one of the hottest young viola players in the world today. She studied under the great virtuosos Pinkas Zuckerman and Yuri Bashmet. He has also been praised by the great master Eschenbach as having "a compelling power of persuasion and a high degree of charisma," and is considered to have a promising future. The works included in this recording are Elgar's Cello Concerto arranged for viola and Schnittke's Viola Concerto. Elgar said, "I have tried to pay homage to the arrangement by Tartis and to listen as closely as possible to the power of the original version.The version of Schnittke's Concerto for Viola, which was arranged by viola pioneer Lionel Turtis, with his own modifications, is a masterpiece of the viola concerto. Another masterpiece of the viola concerto, Schnittke's Viola Concerto was dedicated to the famous viola player Yuri Bashmet. Carpenter's version of this work, which quotes Bashmet's name (B-A-S-C-H-M) for the theme, is a true challenge to the Bashmet disc, which is the most representative of this piece. ［Comment courtesy of King International.
