Description:
Johann Wilhelm Wilms, a composer who lived at the same time as Beethoven, breathes new life into the masterpieces that were beloved in the Dutch salons of his day. Born in a small village in the Bergisches Land on the right bank of the Middle Rhine River, Wilms was taught piano and composition by his father and older brother, and taught himself to play the flute. He was active as a flutist, pianist, organist, and entertainer. Later, he married the daughter of a wealthy Amsterdam art collector, from whom he also benefited greatly. And in his spare time, he composed in his spare time. Nevertheless, his reputation as a composer was so great that his works were performed at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, where it is said that E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote a positive review of his performance. Vilms was successfully selected (until 1932) for a contest for a new national anthem, which was held after the establishment of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815.The fact that his music was adopted even though he was a "foreigner" must mean that his talent was widely recognized in the Netherlands. This follow-up to the first collection (MDG90321496) includes works for flute and piano, as well as a trio work that includes a cello. The cello is a pioneering work of the Romantic period in that it is written with musical synergy rather than simply compensating for the weaknesses of the low and high notes of the piano, which was in use around 1800. And the Sonata, Op. 33, is a substantial work that is typical of Wirms, who knew how to handle the flute. Helen Dubbelinghaus's dignified and pleasant tone is convincing on every note, and MDG's well-balanced three-dimensional recording breathes new life into a masterpiece that was a favorite in the Dutch salons of the day.
