It sold 500,000 copies in the U.S. and was certified as a gold seller by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).Formed by core members Walter Becker (bass) and Donald Fagen (vocals, keyboards), Steely Dan began to gain popularity in the late 1970s, and the seven albums they released during that time blended elements of jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and pop Steely Dan's music is a blend of jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and pop. Steely Dan's familiar melodic hooks, complex harmonies and time signatures, and commitment to the recording studio created a sophisticated and distinctive sound. Becker and Fagen, along with producer Gary Katz, gradually transformed Steely Dan from a performing band into a studio project, hiring session musicians to record their compositions. Although they did not, their popularity grew throughout the 1970s, their albums became critics' favorites, and their singles became staples on adult and pop radio stations. COUNTDOWN TO ECSTASY has a rock sound with strong jazz influences. It consists of up-tempo, four- to five-minute rock songs that, aside from the bluesy bumps of "Bodhisattva" and "Show Biz Kids," feature subtle textures and jazz-like interludes. This is the only album Steely Dan wrote for a live band." My Old School" features pious horns, aggressive piano riffs, and guitar solos. The Boston Rag" evolves from a jazzy tune into an unpolished performance by the band, including a distorted guitar solo by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. Jim Hodder's drumming eschews rock in favor of pop and jazz grooves. Bop-style jazz solos are set within the context of the pop songs on "Bodhisattva. Tom Hull describes the style and production of the album as "clean and slick, dissonance-free, and free of clutter, reminiscent of 1940s bop and over-produced early 60s pop rock. (1/2)
