Description:

Schubert reveals the true prowess of the perfectionist Carzon. This is another masterful performance—Mozart with the LSO—recorded immediately after his highly acclaimed concert with the BPO in Edinburgh. While Carzon sought perfection in all his works, the Schubert recorded on this album is a performance that can truly be called the embodiment of that word. From the timbre of every single note to the interpretation of the entire piece, everything is controlled with almost obsessive precision; one might even say this is music that transcends the limits of human ability. The recording even captures the audience, overwhelmed by this performance, unable to resist applauding between movements due to their profound emotion. Carson reflected that his teacher, Arthur Schnabel, played a significant role in helping him attain this extraordinary ability. Listening to his performance of the First Piano Concerto, one senses that their goal was not merely beautiful music, but a balance between the left and right hands, each part, and every voice. As for the Mozart concerto, he had performed the same piece in Edinburgh just a few days before this concert with Boldt. He was accompanied by the BPO under the baton of Horenstein, and it was such a magnificent performance that Cardas, the leading authority of the time, confessed he was “speechless.” However, the prevailing opinion after both concerts concluded was that the LSO, conducted by Boldt, with its meticulously crafted string and woodwind sections, had the edge in terms of supporting Carson. In short, a miracle occurred: two legendary performances spanning two centuries were heard within just a few days. Even in today’s era, where new pianists with astonishing virtuosity are emerging one after another, Carson’s unique and unparalleled presence has not faded in the slightest. This recording serves as a reminder that Carson remains the greatest pianist of his generation.
