The first-ever reissue compiling three solo albums released in the 1980s by Mario Luís Silva, a musician who dedicated his life to researching and contributing to Angola’s traditional folk music! Born in 1953 in Luanda, the capital of Angola in West Africa, Mario Luís Silva is a musician who dedicated his life to researching and contributing to Angolan music as a guitarist, composer, and music instructor. At the age of 18, he co-wrote the classic Bonga album *Angola 72*, which remains a landmark in Angolan music history. Over the course of his career spanning more than 50 years, he moved from Angola to various European countries, learning directly from other West African musicians such as Manu Dibango and Francis Bebey, and released numerous albums starting in the late 1970s. Furthermore, he has continued his multifaceted activities, publishing textbooks on traditional Angolan languages for Portuguese speakers and books summarizing the history of Angolan traditional folk music. This compilation ranges from harmonically rich tracks heavily influenced by Angola’s traditional folk music, Semba and Kazukuta, to the drum machine-driven proto-deep-house-style Afro-blues experimental piece " Kazum-zum-zum," an experimental Afro-blues track with proto-deep house elements that makes full use of a drum machine; "KizombaKyaKisanji," a track with a Balearic vibe that expresses a microcosm reminiscent of Afro-futurism through thumb piano and percussion; and "KoraKyaNgola," an Afro-version of Caetano or Eduardo Matteo—"KoraKyaNgola," and more. This collection features carefully selected tracks from three ultra-rare albums released by Mario in Angola during the 1980s. While the sound is soft and gentle, with a greater emphasis on harmony and melody compared to the music of other West African countries that were former French or British colonies, the delicate yet complex rhythm section is quintessentially African. From beautiful ballads to groovy tracks with strong jazz influences, his skillful acoustic guitar playing—which carries a somewhat melancholic tone—is truly exquisite. (1/2)
