Description:
The Pacifica String Quartet, which won a Grammy Award for "Best Chamber Music Performance" in 2009 for its "Elliott Carter: String Quartets," presents two chamber music collections by Brahms and Schumann. The ensemble tends to focus on modern and contemporary repertoire, such as the aforementioned Carter and the complete string quartets of Shostakovich (BOX-1003), but their centripetal performance of Mendelssohn, released previously, boasts a high degree of perfection that overwhelms the performances of other ensembles, and their recordings of other Romantic works have been long anticipated. The ensemble's previous release of Mendelssohn's centripetal performance was a masterpiece of perfection that overwhelmed the other ensembles. This time, the Brahms ensemble was joined by Menahem Pressler, a veteran pianist with a long and distinguished career. He is also known as a founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio and has a keen eye for chamber music, but surprisingly, this is the first time he has recorded this piece. What a wonderful intergenerational collaboration! Schumann's string quartet is also the first recording for the Pacifica String Quartet, and there is a fresh atmosphere throughout. Naxos Japan
