Gringolts Quartet recorded Brahms' String Quintet with Lilli Mayara on viola! Ilaria Gringolts won the Paganini International Violin Competition at the age of just 16, and made her CD debut with Paganini's Concerto No. 1 (BIS-999). Since then, she has performed and recorded a very wide range of repertoire from Baroque to newly commissioned works.He is active not only as a soloist but also as a member of the Gringolts Quartet, which has released recordings of the string quintets by Glazunov and Taneyev (BIS SA-2177), Schoenberg's String Quartets Nos. 1 & 3 (BIS SA-2567) and Nos. 2 & 4 (BIS SA- 2267), and Mendelssohn and Enesco's Octet (KKC-6324 / BIS SA-2447) with META4. Brahms' String Quintet No. 1, composed in 1882 and premiered in Frankfurt in the same year, is a typically Brahmsian work with a bright folk style throughout, a solid structure, and a precise form. On the other hand, No. 2, composed in 1890 and premiered in Vienna in the same year, was originally conceived as Symphony No. 5. It is full of power, vigorous passion, and fresh creativity that is hard to believe that it was written in his later years.
