Frank Peter Zimmermann, the greatest violinist of our time, has finally recorded Bach’s unaccompanied works! Zimmermann has been active on the world’s leading stages since the mid-1980s. He performs a wide-ranging repertoire—from Baroque to contemporary—with masterful skill and complete freedom, and has earned high acclaim for his numerous recordings to date. When it comes to J.S. Bach recordings, he previously recorded the complete violin sonatas with Enrico Pace. He has released a studio recording from 2006 (Sony Classical) and a live DVD recorded in 2008 (EUROARTS (20-64068)). As for the violin concertos, he recorded the complete set in 1988 with the British Chamber Orchestra (formerly EMI, now Warner Classics), conducted by Geoffrey Tate, the English Chamber Orchestra (formerly EMI, now Warner Classics), and an album recorded in 2017 with the Berlin Baroque Soloists (hanssler Classic (KKC-5922/HC-17046)). In addition, he has recorded the Goldberg Variations arranged for string trio by the Zimmerman Trio (BIS [KKC-6044/BISSA-2347]) and the “Canon in Twelfth” from *The Art of Fugue* (ECM). However, while he has performed unaccompanied violin works in concert, he has been extremely cautious about recording them. In 2020 and 2021, when Zimmerman was in his mid-50s, he finally made these recordings! This marks their debut on disc. He plays with overwhelming technique and a graceful, rich tone, and his charm shines through to the fullest in this Bach recording as well; his performance, brimming with perfect articulation and a sense of song, can truly be called among the finest of our time. The instrument used is Zimmerman’s beloved 1711 Stradivarius, “Lady Inchquin.” This instrument, once owned by Kreisler, is a legendary instrument with an enchantingly beautiful tone; hearing Zimmermann perform Bach on this beloved instrument, which has been his constant companion for many years, is simply extraordinary.
