The Chiaroscuro Quartet, led by Ibragimova, performs Haydn's Six String Quartets, Op. 20, Vol. 2! The Chiaroscuro Quartet, led by violinist Alina Ibragimova, made a successful first visit to Japan in April 2016, and this is their second Haydn release, following their first appearance on BIS (BIS SA 2158 / KKC 5677). The group, which performs classical and early romantic repertoire, has released discs of Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Mendelssohn on the French Aparte label, all of which have been well received. This disc includes Haydn's Six String Quartets, Op. 20, and the fourth through sixth pieces (String Quartets Nos. 34-36).The first movement of No. 34 is an elaborate sonata form with a three-beat musical theme, the second movement is a simple variation, the third movement is a minuet colored with gypsy-like syncopations, and the fourth movement is a sonata form with Hungarian rhythmic liveliness. No. 35 is the most famous work in the collection because of its romantic tone. In particular, the first theme of the first movement is a typical example of Haydn's "Sturm und Drang period. The third movement is inspired by Sicilian dances, and the fourth movement is the first of the fugal finale, which develops a two-subject fugue. The final piece, No. 36, the second movement is a free variation on a theme in D, and has a strong fantasy character. The chiaroscuro quartet's crisp and clean playing is suited to Haydn. The performance is rich in shading, which is typical of the term "Chiaroscuro," an art term meaning "light and dark," or "shadow," to create an impression of contrast. King International
