The Most Technically Demanding Piano Piece in the History of Music Sorabji: Opus Clavicembalisticum (5-CD Set) Although he enjoyed a quiet surge in popularity a few years ago, the Indian-British composer Sorabji [1892–1988] is now known primarily among a select few. He was an eccentric figure, known for permitting only a select few performers to play his works due to their extreme difficulty, and he left behind a body of piano music that is, to put it mildly, complex and bizarre. Written between 1929 and 1930, *Opus Clavicembalisticum* is a massive work that takes four hours to perform and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest piano piece in history. Not only is it long, but it is also wildly unconventional in that the entire piece is packed with an enormous number of notes—enough for a four-hand piano piece—making it a truly spectacular work that one might call a feat just to bring to life.
