Description:

A collection of choral works by Erik Berriman, a major contributor to the development of Finnish music! Swedish-Finnish composer Erik Berriman (1911-2006) started out with a romantic style, and from the late 1940s onward contributed greatly to the development of Finnish music with works based on modernist techniques such as the twelve-tone technique, tone rows, and Sprechgesang. Berriman was also active as a choral conductor, composing for the male chorus he directed, and many of his choral works are included in "Berrimaniana" (Alba ABCD392), released in 2016, 10 years after his death, as well as works for mixed chorus and children's chorus, and many other works that involve choral singing in some form. The works on the new BIS album "Erich Berriman Choral Works 1936-2000" are mainly for mixed chorus.Losing a Loving Friend," arranged from an Ostrobothnian folk song and premiered in 1936; his first original work, "Summer is Here" (1943); "My Tree is a Pine," composed on a poem by Per Lagerqvist and showing the spreading branches of the pine tree as a "graceful sound painting" in polyphony; "Lamento" and "Bulletta," written in the 1950s, when he began to distance himself from tonality; "The Rut of the Gods," on a poem by Edith Södergren of Sweden; and "The Rut of the Gods," written in the 1960s on a poem by Edith Södergren. a pair of "Lamento" and "Bulletta" written in the 1950s, when he began to distance himself from tonality; "Trail of the Gods" on a poem by Swedish poet Edith Södergren; the "Petrarch Suite" from Petrarch's lyric poem collection "Canzoniere"; and the "My Tree is a Pine Tree" on a text by German psychologist Peter Lauster. Inspired by a text by Peter Lauster, "No to the Anxiety of Life", "Homage" to Bartok, one of Berriman's favorite composers, "Our Land", a work for recitation and mixed chorus based on the words of the Finnish national anthem written by J. L. Runeberg, a "modernist approach to music", and the Finnish lyric "The Land of Our Own". Our Land" (2000), and "Vainamoinen" (2000), a composition based on Lars Huldén's Swedish translation of chapter 41 of the Finnish epic poem "Kalevala," a song sung by the "immortal sage" with a kantele in his hand. The three pieces, "My Tree is a Pine Tree," "Watercolors," the first piece from "Four Songs for Mixed Chorus," and "Daughters," a Finnish folk song, are presented here on CD for the first time. The Helsinki Chamber Choir was founded in 1962. The conductor, Nils Schwekendijk, was born in Germany. He studied music at Clare College, Cambridge, and orchestral and choral conducting in Freiburg and Helsinki. He has made guest appearances with the Finnish National Opera, the SWR Vocal Ensemble, and the Netherlands Radio Choir, and has been the artistic director of the Helsinki Chamber Choir since 2007. He teaches choral conducting as a professor at the Sibelius Academy at the Helsinki University of the Arts. King International
