This is a collection of piano works by composers born in Arkansas, located in the south-central United States. It includes works by John Hilliard (1947-), Florence Price (1887-1953), Conlon Nancarrow (1912-1997), and Stephen Bryant (1972-). Nancarrow is well known, but left his hometown as a young man. John Hilliard was born and raised in Hot Spring, Arkansas, and was a childhood friend of Bill Clinton, who grew up there. Florence Price was the first African-American woman in the U.S. to receive recognition as a composer, and has received a lot of attention in recent years. Cole Berger, of course, is another Arkansas pianist. He was born in Fort Smith. For Americans, the state is almost a country, and this CD is full of patriotic love. Tobu Land System
