Description:
This disc is a collection of 20th century works with the Canadian Chamber Ensemble (Raffi Armenian conducting and piano), which has long been the Stratford Ensemble. Forrester, a native of Quebec, is known for his French as well as his German pronunciation, as evidenced by the fact that Bruno Walter was a great admirer of Forrester's. Forrester's performance of Ravel's "Stéphane Mausoleum" was a great success. The second piece is Franz Schreker's Chamber Symphony (26 min., without Forrester). The second is Franz Schreker's Chamber Symphony (26 minutes; Forrester does not participate). is a masterpiece by this composer who is beginning to be reevaluated, but there are surprisingly few recordings of it, making it a rare find. The performance is beautifully delicate, as if twined with silken threads, which reminds us of the close connection between Schreker and French Impressionism.The third piece is Stravinsky's orchestral arrangement of "Lord, What Fruits in this Land?" and "My Beloved, You Are Wounded" from Hugo Wolf's Spanish Songs. Forrester's German is decisive and his dignified appearance takes one's breath away. It is truly a desperate lament, and the tone of the song is suitable for contemplation. Finally, Arnold Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1 (23 minutes) is included, and the instrumental sound is even more stylish due to its French origin. Muse Trade
