As one of its activities, the Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra, based in Kokkola, holds the Kokkola Winter Accordion in February each year. The festival features a week of diverse accordion music. The Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra's new album features three pieces commissioned for the festival. Minna Leinonen (1977-) studied with Jouni Kaipainen at the Sibelius Academy and received her M.Sc. She continues her studies under Veli-Matti Poumala, a Ph. Many of his compositions are inspired by extra-musical sources such as natural phenomena, literature, and cultural heritage, which is reflected in the titles of his works. The album Vyory (Avalanche), dedicated to Antti Leinonen, is said to reflect the "unsettled social climate" of the year 2021. Auris Sallinen (1935-) is a well-known composer of operas and symphonies such as "The Cavalryman," "The Red Line," "Clervo," and "The King of England Goes to France. Departing from the modernist approach, he has developed his own style, considered neo-classical, with works such as the music for the TV movie "The Iron Age," based on "Kalevala. Concerto for Two Accordions, String Orchestra, and Percussion was co-commissioned by Coccola Cultural Director Sampo Prontaus and the Festivals. Based on Ostrobothnian landscapes, the second movement uses folk songs from the Kokkola region for its material. It was premiered by Sonja Värtäinen and Janne Valkeajoki at the 2020 Festspiele. Accordion virtuoso Veli Kujala (1976-) is an acclaimed composer whose works have been performed in New York, Tokyo, London, Paris, and Berlin, as well as in Finland. He is also known for his development of the quarter-tone accordion in collaboration with composer Sampo Haapamäki. Shape-Shifter" is a music that expresses "shape-shifters" in four parts: "Lento Affettuoso," "Allegro con brio," "Larvo intensivo," and "Allegro con foco," all of which utilize the characteristics of the accordion, "a chameleon of tones. Co-commissioned by the Festivals and the Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra, it was premiered solo by Petteri Varis at the 10th Kokkola Winter Accordion in 2019. (King International)
