Their longtime partnership brings to this new recording two towering masterpieces in the piano quintet genre written by Sergei Taneyev and Robert Schumann. 70 years and 1,000 miles apart, these works were written by Schumann, who was a major influence on the Russian composer, and by Taneyev, who was a major influence on Schumann. and are closely related, with Taneyev gaining popularity in Russia when he began working with Schumann's works as a model. Donohoe and the Sacconi String Quartet were among the last British musicians to tour Russia in February 2020, before the double catastrophe of COVID-19 and the Ukrainian war, and Taneyev's music, which is rarely heard in Russia, was widely accepted by Russian audiences This led to the recording of this album.The jacket design is an illustration by Schumann himself, a sketch of a church in the Kremlin drawn during a visit to Moscow in 1844.
