Tamsin Waley-Cohen, born in London in 1986, was acclaimed by master violinist Ruggiero Ricci as "the most talented young violinist I have ever met" and was selected for the ECHO Rising Stars for the 2016-2017 season, Tamsin Waley-Cohen, who will be making a successful tour of Japan in February 2019 for an unaccompanied recital and performance with the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra, is the second recording by the Albion String Quartet, a young British ensemble formed in 2016. Kalon (Kalon) by Richard Blackford (b.1954), a remarkable British composer whose Great Animal Orchestra (NI 6274), which coexists with a full orchestra and the wild sounds of the natural world, made a splash, is a new work that was just premiered in 2018. Based on the theme of "Kalon," the word for perfect body and moral beauty as conceived by ancient Greek philosophers, the piece expresses complex and rich sounds and textures, including the use of "polytempo," in which a string quartet and string orchestra play simultaneously at different tempos.Tamsin Waley-Cohen has also previously recorded Blackford's Violin Concerto "Niobe" (SIGCD 539), and is well versed with the composer.
