John Cleary: Master of New Orleans Funk His solo live album *Live at the Royal Albert Hall* (vinyl edition), recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in his native England John Cleary, a Grammy Award-winning pianist. Although he is originally from the UK, he has been based in New Orleans, USA, for over 40 years, touring the world and bringing the music of his second home to venues packed with enthusiastic fans. Yet there was one venue he had not yet conquered: the Royal Albert Hall, the historic British mecca of live performance. Then, on June 16, 2025, the long-awaited moment finally arrived. John Cleary performed a solo piano set on the very same stage where such illustrious figures as Wagner, Rachmaninoff, McCartney, and Churchill had once stood. It was an electrifying set that interwove highlights from Clearley’s repertoire with tributes to masters such as Lloyd Price and Jerry Roll Morton, and the entire performance is captured on this album, *Live at the Royal Albert Hall*. John Cleary says, “I’ve played at the Hollywood Bowl, the Sydney Opera House, and the Versus Bon Ton Lounge on Basin Street, but nothing compares to the excitement at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Funky New Orleans music gets the crowd going no matter where you are. "The Albert Hall is a large venue, and although it was sold out and packed to capacity, the audience was in high spirits. Within just a few bars of the performance, the atmosphere became as relaxed as a New Orleans juke joint, and everyone was grooving along," he said. Fortunately, we were able to record and capture the entire sequence of events. With his family in the audience and friends all over the venue, it was a special homecoming performance for Cleary. The result is an explosive, technically masterful performance mixed by veteran engineer (and fellow Brit) John Porter. This is the definitive live document capturing that unforgettable night in London.
