Filled with vitality, delicacy, and improvisation, this is a masterpiece made possible only by a group that has shared the stage for 150 shows a year. The Messthetics features an ironclad rhythm section formed by Joe Lally (b) and Brendan Canty (ds) of Fugazi—a band emblematic of the Washington, D.C. post-hardcore scene—joined by genre-defying guitarist Anthony Pilog. Anthony had been friends with James Brandon Lewis for some time, and the project began when he invited James to perform as a guest at a live show in 2019. James’s rich, soulful sound resonated with the band’s punk spirit, culminating in their debut album in 2024. If their previous work documented the unit’s “childhood,” this new release proves their evolution into a true “band.” Joe Larry reflects, “When we made the last album, we hadn’t done a single thing that felt like a band yet.” Speaking about this album, produced following a year-long extensive tour, James Brandon Lewis says, “The deeper you get to know someone, the richer the relationship becomes. It’s like a cast-iron skillet. The more you use it, the better the food tastes. What you hear on this album is precisely that matured sound, and the urgency of ‘this very moment.’” On the album, the four members’ sophisticated communication creates dynamic developments. “Universal Security” shifts from a floating melody set to a waltz rhythm into a wall of guitar noise, while “Gestations” layers tight funk grooves over bebop-style lines, leading to an explosive climax. The latter exudes an energy reminiscent of a fusion of doom metal and avant-garde jazz, evoking Sonny Sharrock’s masterpiece *Ask the Ages*, which the band has been covering in recent years.
