Pianist, composer, and 2025 MacArthur Fellow Craig Taborn with Tomeka Reed and Chess Smith make their much talked about trio debut. The German daily Hamburger Aventblatt, which reviewed their live performance in the fall of 2025, praised them as "belonging to the forefront of the American jazz avant-garde" and described their playing as "rather 'new music' - unpredictable, exhilarating, and never simplistic," separating it from the strict jazz context. and never simple. The trio's approach in this work is certainly intelligent, but as the title suggests, it covers a broad musical spectrum in which diverse musical styles drawn from history are reconstructed to form a dreamy, unexplored sound world. Dancing grooves and powerful lyrical expressions also emerge in the tightly woven trio's exchanges--four lengthy Taborne originals form the foundation. Craig's musical influences are at times revealing, and the trio's take on Paul Motian's "Mambo Jambo" and Jeri Allen's "When Cabuya Dances" pays homage to his two most important influences in stunning fashion.Tomeka on cello, with his mastery of melodic leads on the one hand and pizzicato bass foundation on the other, fuses Chess Smith's varied acoustics with Craig's comprehensive command of the keyboard with a sense of tension.
