BelburyPoly: Where ’80s electronic music, sci-fi/fantasy, and a haunted aesthetic intersect. A nostalgic yet strangely fresh take on electronic sounds “Sorcery,” the ninth release from BelburyPoly—a project by Jim Jupp, founder of GhostBox Records—is a moody and dramatic electronica album that weaves together early 1980s electronic music with memories of the sci-fi and fantasy works he was obsessed with as a child. This album focuses on the period around 1983, when the production environment began shifting from analog to digital, incorporating equipment and sounds emblematic of the era—such as the Prophet-5, DX7, PPG, Fairlight, Synclavier, TR-808, Simmons Drums, and fretless bass. Amid the bright and vibrant sounds of the ’80s, the album unfolds a unique sonic world featuring Belbury Poly’s signature catchy melodies and a touch of humor. It also strongly reflects the influence of the electronic pop and TV/film music Jupp listened to during his childhood, including works by Bill Nelson, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Japan, Frank Chickens, the BBC’s Elizabeth Parker and Paddy Kingsland, Rod Argent, and the music for *Robin of Sherwood* by Clannad.
