Johanna Rose's latest work! This time, a contrast between "Mare and Folklore"! Johanna Rose, a viola da gamba player originally from Germany, studied under Paolo Pandolfo at the prestigious Schola Cantorum Basiliensis early music university in Switzerland. She is now based in Seville, Spain, and is also highly active as a member of the Academia del Piacere, led by the brilliant Fami Alcaide. This work, Visions du Diable (Phantoms of the Devil), a sequel to her previous album Histoires d'un Ange (Tales of an Angel), is a noteworthy piece structured around the concept of the 18th-century critic Le Brun's words: "Mallet plays like an angel, Folquer like the devil." The program begins with Marais's Suite in E minor, performed as an unaccompanied solo—deliberately eschewing basso continuo—evoking a celestial solitude. Midway, the harpsichord of virtuoso Javier Núñez joins in, singing profound sorrow in Marais's masterpiece, the "Tomboy for Monsieur de Saint-Colombe," before plunging directly into the "devil" Forqueray's Suite in C minor. This is the highlight, where Forqueray's superhuman technique, feared as "unplayable" at the time, and his devilish passion explode.And closing the album is once again unaccompanied (solo) performances of Mare's "Human Voice." After traversing the purity of angels and the intensity of demons, the warm, intimate resonance reminiscent of a "human voice" lingers with profound resonance. Tokyo M Plus
