A Musical Journey Through the Lives of Saints as Depicted by Liszt "Legends of the Saints" Collection The Liszt series, conducted by Hazelbeck and performed by the Vienna Academy Orchestra, is set to begin. After entering the priesthood in 1865, Liszt began composing numerous works based on Christian themes. Unlike most other composers, he wrote a great deal of music inspired by saints, drawing his themes from paintings and books. In this series, titled “Legends of the Saints,” we present works that set the stories of various Christian saints to music. The first installment features St. Cecilia ((2)) and the two St. Francises (“Two Legends” (3)), among others. Liszt composed many symphonic poems in 1850. *Two Legends*, composed around 1862, is widely known in its piano version, but it remains unclear which version—the piano or this orchestral one—was completed first (the order is reversed compared to the piano version). While the piano version is already filled with richly evocative music, the orchestral version is brimming with its own unique charms—such as the magnificent staging of the climax, which stands on equal footing with that of other symphonic poems. The scene of St. Francis preaching resonates with even richer color, thanks to elements such as the use of wind instruments to depict the “little birds.” Also included is *The Canticle of the Sun by St. Francis of Assisi*, based on the prayer “Canticle of the Sun” in which St. Francis of Assisi praised nature. The baritone soloist is Tomasz Konieczny, a familiar face at events such as the Bayreuth Festival and the Tokyo Spring Music Festival. In *The Bells of Strasbourg Cathedral*, he delivers a powerful and dramatic vocal performance against a backdrop of orchestra and choir that is almost Wagnerian in character. The album also includes rarely performed works, such as the concert piece “Hosanna.” Under Hazelbeck’s baton, the music is deeply dramatic and imbued with a devout atmosphere, seeming to convey even the solemn ambiance of a church. Hazelbeck is a leading figure who has earned numerous awards and released many recordings as both an organist and conductor. In 1985, he founded the Vienna Academy Orchestra, which specializes in period instruments, and has presented concert series ranging from Baroque to Romantic works at the Vienna Musikverein and around the world.
