Barenboim's treasured sonata Barragan and Argerich's treasured sonata Pacini take on modern clarinet sonatas! Prokofiev's version of the flute sonata was reworked for clarinet by American composer Kent Kennan and the disc's performer, Pablo Barragan. Originally known as a difficult piece for flute, it is even more difficult for clarinet, allowing the listener to appreciate Barragan's virtuosity. Pablo Barragan is a clarinetist born in Spain in 1987. He studied in his hometown and in Basel, where he was recognized by Barenboim and is a player in the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. Perhaps because of this, he also focuses on works with a strong Jewish flavor (jazz and klezmer) by Bernstein, Weinberg, and others. The piano is played by Sophie Pacini, who was born in 1991 and has been a familiar face at the Argerich Festival in Lugano since 2010. These four works are not mere accompaniments, as the composers were all piano virtuosos. Pacini competes on equal terms with Barragan and gives a dynamic performance. King International
