Description:
Here is the Ethiopia you don't know. Ancient traditional folk sung with a unique tone of stringed instruments. The begena is a large, ten-stringed solid zither that has long been used by the Amhara people of Ethiopia. It has a dull tone similar to that of the Brazilian berimbau, and has a range of expression that is both tender and compassionate. Many Amharic liturgies are accompanied by singing, and unlike secular music, only percussion instruments are used for accompaniment. The beguena holds a special place among them, and there is even a tradition that God gave it to King David, and that Menelik I brought the beguena to Ethiopia with the Ark of the Covenant. Its shape symbolizes an important element in the faith, and its body, which "gives birth" to sound, can even be identified with the Virgin Mary. Death Is Not The End documents how people use the beguena to weave songs in secret. The alternation of the smooth singing, which is common to traditional folk songs of the past and present, and the whisper voice, which seems to respond to the unique low tone of the beguena, is the very essence of the detailed breathing of the people who live and work in the region.
