A metaphorical opera about the life, death, and reincarnation of Maria, "Maria of Buenos Aires" is a 90-minute work written by Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992), a close friend, on a libretto by the Argentine poet and tango scholar Horacio Ferrer (1933-2014). The main character, Maria, is the personification of tango as an entity for Piazzolla, and the opera is composed of a suite of bizarre scenes involving Maria and Buenos Aires. The intermingling of modernity, prehistory, and religion is more a play on words than a storyline, and has an interesting surrealist quality. The performance and recording in Italy are brilliant, but the female singer who plays Maria is Se Suarez Paz from Buenos Aires, and in the famous "I am Maria" (CD1, track 4), she sings "Jo soi Maria," which is usually sung as "Jo soi Maria," but in the Buenos Aires style, she pronounces it "Sho soi Maria," which is the Buenos Aires pronunciation of "Jo soi Maria. In the famous "I am Maria" (CD1 track 4), the singer surprises the audience by singing "Sho soi Maria" in the Buenos Aires pronunciation, instead of the usual "Jo soi Maria.Incidentally, this "I am Maria" is the same music as the "Milonga of the Annunciation" (CD2 track 7), which describes the reincarnation of Mary, to which Ferrer later added text, making the reincarnation more easily understood and popularizing this version. The male singer for the five roles is Alberto Maria Munafo, a Sicilian-born baritone with a wonderfully smooth and beautiful voice. The role of the little devil is played by the actor Gualtiero Scola, who is also a well-known voice actor, creating an exquisite voice tone that portrays the borderline between good and evil. The bandoneon is played by Cesare Chiacciaretta, who has toured more than 50 countries as Italy's foremost bandoneon player, and his expressive performance brings out Piazzolla's character. The conductor and pianist Filippo Allia released a Piazzolla album with Chiacchiaretta in 2023, and this "Maria in Buenos Aires" was also session-recorded at the same venue in September 2021., booklet, in English and Spanish (8 pages), including commentary by Dr. Francesca Lavenda of the Reggio Calabria State Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
