Description:

A Collection of Secular Voice Music by Unknown Baroque Composers This is an album of six selections from the eleven pieces in the "Collection of Canzonettas and Cantatas, Op. 3" by the Baroque composer Mazzafferrata. Mazzafferrata was music director of the Basilica of Vercelli in the Duchy of Savoia for five years, and then of the Accademia della Morte, a famous professional association of musicians in the Papal territory of Ferrara, for 16 years until his death. His works were published mainly during his time in Ferrara, and many of them were republished, which suggests that there was a certain demand for them. The music on this CD was also published in Papal Bologna in 1668 and reprinted twice, in 1675 and 1680, so it is possible that it was circulating throughout Europe. In fact, a contemporary composer, Maurizio Cazzati, also printed it in Bologna in the 1660s and shipped it around the world. It is interesting to note that the melody in "Oh, Hope, what have I done to thee" (about 1 minute 26 seconds into track 5) appears 45 years later in Cantata No. 21 "My heart is full of sorrow," composed by Bach in Weimar in 1713.In the ninth chorale, the melody of the Mazzaferrata is combined with a chorale melody by Georg Neumark (1621-1681). Prince Johann Ernst, who served Bach, had a large collection of sheet music in Amsterdam, which may have been included in this collection. The booklet (English & Italian, 16 pages) includes commentary by Polish composer, music theorist, and doctor of humanities Pawel Sucelecki.
