Description:

Ferdinand Ries was known as Beethoven's friend and accompanist. It seems that Ries' father, Franz, was a teacher of Beethoven. His works for flute are among Ries' own most accomplished, and he has developed them from small pieces and sonatas to chamber music for flute and other instruments. Among his works, the recorded "Sentimental Sonata" is reputed to be a masterpiece. The Three Sonatas, Op. 86, are relatively easy pieces, and are said to have been written for amateurs who were familiar with the music of the time. Similarly, Sonatina Op.5 is a work for the so-called general public, with its rippling dispersed chords in the left hand, gentle tempo, and two or three-voice melody that is easy on the fingers. It is familiar as a cheerful work, and it is an excellent work that gives a sense of the music that Ries intended to create.
