Castelnuovo-Tedesco wrote 53 works for instrumental ensemble between 1953 and 1967, which he named "Greeting Cards". Twenty-one of these pieces are for guitar. As the composer described them as "alphabet pieces," they are built around a clear theme derived from two chromatic scales, one above and one below, each combining a note and a letter of the alphabet. The arrangement of the themes depends on the family name of the dedicatee and is related to the same basic principles of serial playing. The work is like a portrait of the performers, their friends and acquaintances, each of them an affectionate sounding piece of music. Performed by Cristiano Porqueddu. A guitarist whom critics have described as "a central figure for a new generation of musicians." He has performed actively, including a recital at Carnegie Hall, and his Brilliant Classics discography is expanding.
