Description:
Param Veer is an English composer of Indian descent. After studying Indian classical music in Delhi, he came to England to study composition under P.M. Davis and Oliver Nassen. Raga Field" is a concerto for sarod, a traditional Indian instrument similar to the sitar, and ensemble. The mysterious sound of the sarod and the dry resonance of the Klangforme Wien, conducted by Enno Poppe, create a dialogue between India and Europe. The soprano creates a somewhat expressionistic and close-knit music accompanied by a single cello in the song cycle "Running Through the Starry Sky," based on a poem by the great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. Hayagripa is another name for Vishnu, the supreme god of Hinduism, who is regarded as a bodhisattva in Buddhism, and is expressed in a colorful, somewhat Ligeti-esque style. This is an excellent work that reinterprets and musicalizes traditional Indian music and thought with European abstract thinking. Tobu Land System
