EarthaKittrecordedforRCAVictorRecordsfrom1953to1957,anassociationthatproducedfivealbumsandassortedsingles.Thebulkofthismaterialiscontainedonthistwo-CDsetfromtheBritishreissuelabelAvid,whichtakesadvantageofthe50-yearcopyrightlimitonrecordingsinEuropetoassemblethecollection,masteredfromoldrecords,withouthavingtotakethetroubletogetpermissionorpayalicensingfee.(SonyBMGcontinuestoclaimcopyrightonthematerialintheU.S.).Thefirstofthefour"classic"albumstobeincludediswhatisreferredtotheasthe"Americanversion"ofThatBadEartha.Itmightbemoreaccuratetodescribeitasthe12"LPversionofThatBadEartha,whichdifferedconsiderablyfromtheinitialten-inchLPversion.Backintheearly1950s,theten-inchLP,containingeighttracks,wastheindustrystandard,andRCAreleasedtwoKittalbumsinthatformat,RCAVictorPresentsEarthaKittandThatBadEartha,in1953.Bythemiddleofthedecade,however,the12-inchLPsupplanteditsshortercousin,andRCAreleasedanalbumcalledThatBadEarthain1955inthatformat.Confusingly,itactuallycontainedtheeighttracksfromRCAVictorPresentsEarthaKittplusonlyfouroftheeighttracksfromtheten-inchversionofThatBadEartha.Thatisthe"Americanversion"foundhere.Nextcomethe12tracksthatmadeupKitt's1955album,DowntoEartha.Afteracoupleofnon-LPsinglestracksendthefirstdisc,thesecondbeginswithKitt'sbiggesthit,"SantaBaby,"followedbyher1956albumThursday'sChildandher1958albumSt.LouisBlues,thenacoupleofmorenon-LPsinglestracksbringthecollectiontoanend.Inthematerial,Kittestablishesherselfasanexotic,sophisticatedchanteuse,capableofsinginginmanylanguagesandstyles.Severalsongsexploitherpromiscuousgold-diggerimage.TheSt.LouisBluestrackstakeadifferenttack,however.ThealbumwasrecordedtocommemorateKitt'sappearanceinafilmbiographyofW.C.Handybythesamename,andonitshesangmostlyHandy-composedbluessongsbackedbyaDixielandjazzband.Thismaterialisnotreallyherforte,butshehandlesitcapablyenough.Kittdidalotmorerecordingafterthis,butthesearethetracksthatestablishedherpersona,andhermostcommerciallysuccessfulperformancesarehere.~WilliamRuhlmann|
